April/ May Alumni Army
*** SuperBowl!!!!! Who will forget the ‘ice apocalypse’ that occurred during the inaugural hosting of the SuperBowl in North Texas! Through it all, parties happened, fashion shows went on, and the cities movers and shakers were out on the town.
The ‘Spirit of DCC’ were in the mix as well! We had a record setting 4 appearances scheduled!
Thursday, February 3rd- ‘Why Not?’ Sports Expo and the Hall of Fame Players Classic
Regina Tucker (DCC 1992, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98) was scheduled to attend the ‘Why Not?’ Sports Expo on behalf of the DCC to speak about her tenure on the squad and to motivate young girls to pursue a career in the sports industry. The weather cancelled this one. Thank you Regina for stepping up to represent the DCC!
Our first, real public appearance occurred that same morning. After much location shuffling, the Hall of Fame Players Classic (golf tournament) got relocated to the Brookhaven Country Club after the golf pro at Timarron slipped and broke his ankle at his club. The executive decision was also made to cancel the golf and just have a luncheon and auction. All the monies raised at this event went into the Hall of Fame players fund to support those players who were pre- ‘big contract’ era and are in need of a helping hand. Four of us attended the event to sell raffle tickets and help with the auction. Above we are shown holding our ‘This hole sponsored by the ‘Spirit of DCC’ golf ball. Pictured are: Misti Johnson Langley (DCC 2004), me, Helen Stubblefield Peck (DCC 1989, 90, 91) and Ranie Lindeman (DCC 1981). Here we are with Hall of Famer, Lynn Swann.
Thursday, April 7, 2011
When camp wrapped, it was off to Ft. Worth for our main event, the ‘Taste of the NFL’ party- affectionately known as the ‘party with a purpose’. 70 alumni were on hand to meet and greet guests as they arrived in our famous ‘player intro’ lines, sell raffle tickets, and host players and chefs at their stations. After months of planning, the event seemed to be over in a flash and then it was time to enjoy an intimate concert by Martina McBride. This was the first time in the 20 year history of the event that cheerleaders were asked to participate, the first time they raised over $1 million dollars, and beat previous attendance records- 3500 people attended the event compared to the record of 2800. In one night, they raised enough money to prepare 900,000 meals. The local event is coming up on April 17th... be sure to sign up!
Maya Hayes (DCC 2002, 03) shares the scene with Dick Anderson, member of the undefeated Miami Dolphins team of ’72.
Saturday, February 5th- Camp Katina and the Taste of the NFL
Boy, there’s money in Southlake! Camp Katina, put on by Katina, wife of NFL player, Jason Taylor, benefits the Jason Taylor foundation and is held at every SuperBowl. The camp was held at the incredible indoor football facility at Southlake Carroll High School. There was a full field, goal posts, and bleachers inside this building- amazing! 10 alumni were on hand to teach pom and dance technique to 50 children from the local Boys & Girls Clubs. Unfortunately, the bus was involved in an accident on the way to the facility. Everyone was ok, but shaken up, so they decided not to attend. The show must go on, so all the children in the stands were invited to take to the field and participate. A wonderful morning was had for all and some future cheerleaders were spotted on the field.
